An electric muscle stimulation (EMS) device offers a variety of programs that allow you to do several types of strength and endurance building workouts. Massage and Active Recovery programs make a vast difference in the speed of muscle recovery and lessen the possibility for an over-use injury. Although not intended to replace your normal training, once in a while sitting on the couch to do a workout instead of biking or running in the rain, snow, heat or cold is an added bonus. And if you travel, using an EMS device is invaluable to replace workouts missed to lack of proper facilities or endless meetings. Using an active recovery program daily to reduce amount of recovery time and ease sore muscles will have the unit paid for itself in no time !
How Electric Muscle Stimulation Works
Electrostimulation uses electrical impulses acting on motoneurons and nerve terminals to promote muscle contraction in a manner similar to voluntary contraction.
Electric Stimulation units are about the size of a hand-held Game Boy and has four leads, each split into positive (+) and negative (–) connectors. Reusable adhesive pads are placed at strategic points on the muscles you want to engage in a particular workout. Connect the leads to the wire coming from the pad and you are ready for your EMS work out.
Each pre-programmed workout is defined for the upper or lower body. To begin your EMS workout, select upper or lower body and off you go. Kick back on the couch and run the program of your choice. You can also use EMS while sitting at your desk.

Conductivity gel works by filling in pores with a saline solution that is the same pH as the skin. This gives a good contact area for the pads to transmit the electrical signal through the skin to the muscles below. It also provides a protective barrier to the pads so that the adhesive is not affected as much by oils and dirt on the skin.
